Do not use General Finishes Gel Stain or any oil based finish outside where this direct exposure to water. If your furniture will be resting under a cover and not exposed to direct water, you may have a successful result. We recommend our Milk Paint or Exterior 450 products instead.

Exterior Wood Stain: Should You Use Gel Stain? There are a number of different types of exterior wood stain which can be bought in home improvement stores. While looking at the latex non-penetrative stains, and the oil-based penetrative ones, you may also have noticed a gel stain. Gel stain does not need to be applied with a brush, making the work quicker and more satisfying. In addition, the gel stain requires another sealant in order to finish the job of treating the wood, which is an additional expense.

Today, I am going to show you how to make a painted exterior door look like a stained wood door (for under $50!!!!). Luckily, I didn’t have to resort to plan b , and I am super thrilled with the outcome of the gel stain.

I went with Minwax’s Gel Stain in the color Walnut (you can find it here). When applying the first coat of gel stain, I addressed the flat surfaces first, and then worked on the detailed grooves. Tip: Not sure if it was the humidity or the nature of the gel stain itself, but it took almost an entire day for the first coat of stain to dry.
